The Health Act
Smokefree legislation was introduced in England on 1st July
2007. It means that virtually all enclosed public places and
workplaces, as well as work vehicles used by more than one person,
are required to be smokefree. This means that it is against the
law:
- to smoke in an enclosed public place or work vehicle.
- for people who control or manage smokefree premises or vehicles
(such as a pub, restaurant or taxi) to fail to prevent smoking from
taking place
- for people who occupy or manage smokefree premises or vehicles
to not display the required no-smoking signs
For further information about the legislation, visit the Smokefree
England website.
Smokefree legislation also applies to the smoking of tobacco in
waterpipes, known as shisha
or hookah. Islington Council has produced guidance for
businesses who supply shisha, which can be downloaded
here.
